Interesting Tang Band Info
« on: July 03, 2021, 08:53:48 PM »
Hi Everybody,
It's been forever since I did anything with the old sw1500 project.  I'm looking to finally get back to it and make some progress.

In unrelated news, I've recently been discussing Loksound decoders and Tang Band speakers with someone that is considering a move to O scale.  I decided to take a look at Parts Express to see if there was anything new, and I saw a couple of interesting things.  They may not be new to anybody else, but I thought I would mention them in case others were interested.

First up there is now an 1815 module.  As far as I can tell, it shares all the same performance specs with the 1931S that we all were trying to use previously.  The difference is it features the 1815 driver, which has a smaller recessed cone as opposed to the 1931's protruding cone.  And that means that the module is thinner, by about 2.8mm.  It's not much, but it may be the difference between fitting a bigger module into an Atlas sw8/9/1200 or having to settle for the 2008S or 1925S.  The other thing to consider is that the dimensions don't account for cone excursion, which adds to the 1815S's advantage.

Tang Band had the 1815 driver before, but it wasn't previously included in a module with a radiator.  You could buy the 1815 separately, but not the passive radiator, so you couldn't build your own module.  The 1931S is still available, and I still have some in the stash from before, but I think I might order a couple of the 1815S modules to test out.

The other interesting option is the 2025S module.  It's a round drum style like the 1828S, but a bit smaller and without the square flange.  I can't remember if they had this option before or not, so I thought I would mention it.  The response range doesn't go quite as deep as the 1828S, it bottoms out at 95Hz instead of 75Hz, but it's also 8mm shorter in height.  It might fit in an F unit without having to cut through the floor.

Jim -

Thanks for mentioning the newer offerings. I have a 2025SC module that I'm evaluating. You are quite correct that it can fit in a P&D F unit behind the cab without the need to bore a hole through the frame.

I was not aware that the 1815 was a bit smaller. That's worth a study.
