Peeling paint on real wood: Oil+Water Don't Mix!
« on: November 15, 2020, 02:08:26 PM »
We've been fairly dry over here, so here's something I learned a while ago.

There's a fellow by the name of Chuck Doan who posts his model diorama photos on Fotki. I've followed his work for many years and tried a technique that he described on a 1:16 project. His idea works because oil and water do not mix.

The idea starts with real wood. I chose a scrap of 1/16" basswood. Pre-texturing it along the grain with a brass brush or other tool probably would have improved the peeling pattern.

Here's the plan:
  • Stain the wood a weathered gray color. Stain the back too so that it doesn't curl up like a potato chip.
  • When the stain has dried, use a brush and soak the wood with mineral spirits. This is the oil.
  • Watch the surface and when the sheen has flashed off, start brush painting with the final acrylic wall color. Yes, brush paint!
  • Since oil and water don't mix, the acrylic paint will stay soft at the wood boundary after the surface hardens. Water won't pass into the oily wood as easily as dry wood.
  • Presuming you are learning on a scrap piece of wood, lay down a strip of Scotch Magic Tape. To attempt otherwise on a real model isn't at all wise. Don't blame me!
  • Using a narrow tool such as a fingernail, press down the tape on narrow, long selected bits in the direction of the grain.
  • After taping an area, pull the tape back up. Where the tape adhered to the paint, the paint will peel. Learn to control how to press down the tape, and the working time before the oil dries out.

Here's a photo of my first and so far only attempt from a couple years ago. But I plan to try this on a freight station model for Sobol Springs. Click on the photo to enlarge it.

All the best,
Bob

Super cool technique Bob! I can’t wait for you to get started on Sobol Springs! I think it could be a much deserved break from your normal all-things electrical duties!

I love Chuck's work.  I have tried this on a structure that I built using individual boards, it seems to not be as convincing on a scribed sheet.  I found that not all acrylic paint works as well, it worked best for me if the paint was the thick craft paint and not the model type acrylic (like Testors).  I also found out a neat trick, use a heat gun to fade the paint before pealing.  The structure I was building was red and when I waved the heat gun over the wet red paint it dried fast and then started to turn pinkish.  I also found that the "wait to peel" time was important, too soon and it was a mess, too long and it would not peel, which of course can be an advantage.  another thing that I found worked well was to go over the wall with diluted black ink to tie it all in and darken the exposed wood even more, which I think Chuck also did as well.

It is a time consuming process but it works really well.

Your small house project looks great.

Agreed that the technique would work best on board-by-board construction. In my small test on a piece of scrap, I too used a thicker craft paint. Although I didn't do it on my test piece, if I recall Chuck pre-distresses his boards and the added 3D relief helps locate lines of major peel.

I wonder if it would be possible to isolate just a few boards on milled sheet siding by using the tip of a pencil to selectively press the tape down with the grain on only a few boards.

I am building a boxcar model (single sheathed) that is scribed siding.  my plan is to try and use Mig Chipping fluid on it instead of the Chuck Doan method, I'll know next week and I can let you know what happened.
